SUMMARY:Annual Pow Wow and California Native American Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Pabanamanina Pow Wow is to be held September 26-28\, 2025.\nAll drums\, dancers and spectators welcome!\nCome on out to Bishop California for a great weekend in Payahuunadü “Land of flowing water”. \nA pow wow is a gathering\, a place where Indigenous Peoples from all tribal backgrounds come to celebrate their cultures and time-honored traditions.  In the oldest days and the earliest ways these gatherings were held\, for example\, to cure disease or ensure success in a battle or hunt.  This was also a time for tribes to form intertribal alliances.  These alliances allowed tribe-specific songs\, dances\, and ceremonies to be exchanged\, thus laying the foundation for today’s modern\, intertribal “powwow” with the sharing of songs\, dances\, food\, and gift-giving.    \nWhat To Expect \nThe Pabanamanina Pow wow is held at the end of September each year at the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center. For over three decades\, the Bishop Paiute Tribe hosts an inter-tribal gathering to celebrate different tribal cultures with dance and spiritual events. Throughout the weekend\, you’ll find hundreds of Indigenous dancers\, drummers\, and others from around the nation will descend upon Bishop to show off their regalia and their traditional regional dances. Highlights include a free barbecue Saturday of a steer cut from the Tribal herd as well as Hand games which is one of the oldest Owens Valley Paiute and Shoshone Indian traditions that can be traced back to some Creation stories. \n  \nBE OPEN MINDED AND RESPECTFUL \nThe Pabanamanina Pow Wow is held at the pow wow grounds across from Wanaaha Casino.  This event\, hosted by the Bishop Paiute Tribe and its many volunteers\, is held every California Indian Days weekend\, starting with a parade at 10am on California Indian Day.  Throughout the weekend\, you’ll find hundreds of dancers\, singers\, friends\, and family from all over the U.S. and abroad as they come together to share their culture and traditions.  Dancers will wear their traditional regalia and dance their traditional dance-styles.  Singers will sing behind the drum\, the heartbeat behind the powwow for all to feel and hear.  You will see beautiful regalia made by the dancer or their families\, with some passed on from generation to generation.  You will see the intricate beadwork with designs all done by hand that often reflect tribal affiliations combined with personal style.  You’ll also have the opportunity to visit numerous Native craft vendors who will be displaying their hand-made work or take the time to enjoy various food selections such as the popular Indian Taco.  \n

SUMMARY:MUSEUM OF WESTERN FILM HISTORY PRESENTS – CONCERT IN THE ROCKS 2025: BEE GEES GOLD
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Concert in the Rocks will be held Saturday June 14\, 2025.\nJohn Acosta as Barry Gibb has performed in Bee Gees Tributes all over the world for over 14 yrs. In 2025\, John brings his Bee Gees Gold “Ultimate Tribute” to Lone Pine’s Concert in the Rocks. The Bee Gees Gold tribute is the ultimate salute\, as audiences enjoy the experience of seeing the Bee Gees in their prime. Acosta portrays lead singer Barry Gibb with a zest for detail like no other. Backed by a live band\, Bee Gees Gold recreates the look and sound of the Bee Gees from the 60’s to the late 70’s\, with their unique falsettos that made them legends. Performing such early hits as “Massachusetts” and “I Started a Joke” to the later Disco classics “Stayin’ Alive\,” “You Should be Dancing\,” and other\, never to be forgotten Andy Gibb hits..\nThe Concert in the Rocks has been a charity benefit dinner and concert held for over 30 years and is a major fundraiser for the Museum of Western Film History\, whose collections and exhibits pay tribute to the legacy and heritage of Western Films in America. Every June\, Lone Ranger Canyon\, located in the magnificent Alabama Hills\, and one of America’s greatest outdoor venues. is transformed into an “under the stars” venue for hosting the annual Lone Pine – “Concert in the Rocks.” The evening begins with a welcoming reception in the museum. Following the reception attendees are transported to the Alabama Hills for a “Cowboy Ranch” dinner preceding the show. The entertainment starts as early stars grace the evening sky and the setting sun’s shadows become long on the canyon. Soon\, veiled lights create unique and mysterious shadows on the canyon walls. Cinematic Memories of our Western film heroes become freshly imagined as if it were a long-ago Saturday matinee.

SUMMARY:Alabama Gates 2024
DESCRIPTION:Alabama Gates 2024 is a weekend of free community events in Lone Pine\, California\, November 15 – 17\, 2024\, commemorating the centennial of the Alabama Gates Occupation. This significant historical event occurred when the people of Owens Valley non-violently seized the Los Angeles Aqueduct’s control gates just north of Lone Pine on November 16\, 1924\, diverting the entire flow of the aqueduct into the historic Owens River channel in protest of the City of Los Angeles’ aggressive land acquisition and water harvesting activities within the valley that began with the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. The 1924 Alabama Gates occupation evolved into a multi-day community picnic as 700 Owens Valley residents gathered in solidarity with the occupiers over four days. \n  \nOur November 15 – 17\, 2024\, program includes roundtable discussions at Lone Pine’s Statham Hall\, a no-host community picnic at Lone Pine’s Spainhower Park featuring local food truck concessionaires\, film screenings at the Museum of Western Film History\, and an interpretive walking tour with a local naturalist at Patsiata (Owens Lake). Full program schedule is available at alabamagates2024.org. Pre-registration is required for all events. \n  \nThis event is produced by There It Is—Take It! in partnership with Sierra Forever (formerly ESIA). Our program was made possible with support from California Humanities\, a partner of the NEH.
