DESCRIPTION:Come join White Mountain District Trail Ambassador\, Jean\, on a hike up East Fork of Rock Creek where you’ll learn about\, and potentially find\, some medicinal-edibile flora. \nWhat: Learn about conscious foraging of plants\, their edibile and medicinal properties\, and sustainable practices to preserve our wild kingdom. \nMeeting Location: Park at the East Fork Trailhead Day Use loop (Rock Creek Sno-Park). 37.492762\, -118.717218. \nHike Duration: 9 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday\, July 12th. \nLogistics: Our hike will begin at just over 8\,000ft above sea level. We will walk for 1.5 miles and gain 500 feet in elevation before returning to the trailhead. The hike should take about 3.5 hours and total 3 miles round-trip. Please bring snacks\, water\, layers\, and any other essentials for a hike in the mountains. \nThe Sierra Foraging Walk brings many like-minded individuals together to discuss edible and medicinal uses of plants. We discuss sustainable harvesting\, intelligent foraging\, food/medicine preparations and cultural traditions. Wild foraging not only teaches us about the rich and diverse plant life\, but the intelligence of the earth we live on. Plants have an intuitive knowing that a cycle has ended\, a new one is germinating\, and what nutrients are needed to thrive. Plants teach us that change\, rebirth\, and evolution are all part of life.\nThere is certainly a seasonality for harvesting wild flowers\, herbs and mushrooms. Spring is the season for fresh young greens such as nettles\, dandelion\, thistle and mugwort. Early summer is a time of abundant blossoms of onion\, elderflower\, rose\, pennyroyal and fireweed. Late summer is the time for mushrooms and berries such as gooseberry\, elderberries\, rose hips and currant. Fall is when pine nuts and sunflower seeds are plentiful. Winter is a bit more sparse\, but you can look for tree bark and pine needles. \nEach individual participant must register to attend. Participants under 18 must have a parent/guardian register for them. Registration is\, and always will be\, completely free! Optional donations support our continued stewardship and policy programming. \nRegister at friendsoftheinyo.org/events/ \nImportant considerations:\nAll ages welcome!\nThere is no running water at the hike location. There may be opportunities to filter water in the creek if you bring a water filter. They will perform every Monday from now until the leaves turn at the Gazebo in the front of the Bishop Park at 8:00 PM. Bring a chair and/or a blanket and enjoy the cool of the evening with the music of the Bishop Community Band. For nigh unto fifty years local musicians have been serenading the citizens and visitors in Bishop on Monday nights. Every concert is absolutely free of charge. SUMMARY:Drum & Dance Workshops with Fara Tolno
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned West African drumming and dance master\, Fara Tolno\, is presenting a series of workshops in Mammoth Lakes and Bishop\, August 19-23. \nTolno\, a recognized master in his home country of Guinea with an MFA earned in the U.S.\, currently lives in Hawaii. When Mammoth Lakes resident Hari Khalsa – a longtime student of West African dance and drumming – learned that one of her favorite instructors would be touring Colorado\, she invited him to the Eastern Sierra. “Fara is both a master drummer and dancer\, but more importantly a teacher\,” Khalsa says. “He’ll blow your mind… he’s an absolute fireball.” \nTraditional West African dances are each accompanied by a polyrhythm played on several drums whose sounds interweave to create a complex\, dynamic music. Fara will teach a different polyrhythm each day\, followed by the dance it accompanies. Participants can sign up for drumming\, dancing\, or both. All abilities\, including beginners\, are welcome. \nBishop City Auditorium\, August 21\, drumming 5:30 pm\, dance 7:00 pm;\nBishop City Park Pavilion (at back of park)\, August 23\, drumming 8:30 am\, dance 10 am.

DESCRIPTION:Do you love wildflowers? We sure do\, and Little Lakes Valley is one of the best spots to see these beautiful displays all summer long. Join us on one of our FREE Wildflower Walks this summer to learn more about the flowers found in the High Sierra \nWhen: Friday\, August 22\, 8:00am – 11:00am\nWhere: Meet at the Mosquito Flats trailhead kiosk\nWhat: Out and back hike is about 3 miles long with minimal elevation gain\, but be mindful that the trail does start at 10\,000 feet in elevation. \nAll ages are welcome on all of our hikes\, but children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nWe recommend dressing in weather appropriate layers\, having sun protection such as hats and sunglasses\, wearing comfortable walking/hiking shoes\, and bringing a small pack with water and snacks. \nSpace is limited!
