Millpond Recreation Area

As soon as you step outside in Bishop, the mountains loudly call for you. Their huge peaks beckoning you to visit. Cutting a sharp line against the western skyline. It’s easy to get distracted and beeline to them or any of the other major attractions such as Owens River Valley. And yet, if you’re looking for an easy escape to enjoy the majestic mountain range of the Sierra, look no further than the hidden gem right under your nose – the Millpond Recreation Area.
What To Expect
Just six miles northwest of town, this 120-acre park has a bit of everything for anyone just looking for some outdoor fun in a tranquil setting. Located perfectly in Owens Valley where you get unobstructed views of both the Sierra to the West and the White Mountains to the East. Although the park’s sky is very open, you’ll find plenty of shade from trees.
Amenities
Roll down the grassy hill to the softball fields, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Those wanting to picnic or even BBQ will find grills and a few gazebos spread throughout its layout. There’s also an archery center, horseshoe pits, and camping areas for both RVs and tents.
Disc Golf
In addition to the amenities above, you’ll also find an eighteen-hole disc golf course. With half the course being relatively open and few elevation changes except for the first and last holes, it’s a great introductory course for beginners. While normal golf is expensive to play, Disc Golf can be done with as little as a $40 investment in a few discs. Don’t’ know where to start? Take a look at the history of the sport and get a few disc golf tips to get you started on your way.
The Pond
As the name alludes, Millpond Recreation Area has a large pond that doesn’t allow motorboats, making it perfect to teach your kids to fish for warm water fish, including bass and crappie or go swimming by leaping from the rope swing. The ten-acre body of water even has a small ADA accessible dock on one end.
Equestrian Center
The Millpond Equestrian Center is an amazing place where children can learn about the responsibility of horse care and the thrill of competition. Stop on by, they specialize in jumping, dressage and western riding.
