Bishop Visitor's Center

Not too long ago yoga classes were offered in big cities and urban areas but in small towns it was hard to find. Not so anymore. Yoga is so much a part of daily life for many that even a little town like Bishop has not one, or two, but four options for getting your stretch on.

Yoga thrives here in part because the eastern Sierra is home and destination to so many active types: from climbers to runners, bicyclists to skiers,  hikers to equestrians. It offers something for every age and for all body types and conditions. Classes range from basic stretching and flexibility to breath work, strength, balance, and meditation. Yoga complements every sport, since every sport favors certain muscle groups and neglects others. A regular practice can stave off injury, increase flexibility, and reduce stress, so what are you waiting for? No need to miss your regular practice or postpone establishing one.

Bishop Yoga & Pilates Center, located at 150 Willow Street, offers classes in Iyengar, Stott, and Vinyasa traditions. There are numerous classes offered every day of the week, and drop ins are welcome. Massage and private sessions are available by appointment, and you can find class schedules, booking information and more information on the website.

Flowmotion Pilates, located at 168 West Line Street, hosts a wide range of classes in Pilates, dance and yoga. Check the class schedule for a list of current classes, workshops, teachers, and personalized instruction in bodywork.

Yoga with Desiree offers public classes, workshops, private classes, corporate classes, children’s classes and classes for the Huuubu program on the Paiute reservation. Desiree has studied both Iyengar and Kundalini yoga, teaches classes at Flowmotion Pilates as well as workshops and retreats in a variety of locations.

Sierra Shanti is at 275 South Main Street. Prana Vinyasa Flow, as developed by Shiva Rea, is what you’ll enjoy at this intimate studio, along with a wide variety of workshops, such as this month’s Ayurveda Wellness Weekend with Maria Garre and ongoing teacher training.

There’s no need to delay taking that Kundalini class  you’ve always wanted to try or worry that your back pain is going to flare up without your morning Sun Salutations. Bishop’s yoga teachers have your body’s best interests at heart, so don’t forget to pack your mat.
