Sure, you can watch documentaries about miners and settlers traveling through the Sierra but why not do it in real life. Set up a day outing or up to a week-long trip via a packing outfit. To this day, each trailhead up and down the Eastern Sierra is still served by one of more than a dozen pack outfits. Their sturdy horses and mules are ready to pack supplies into the high country. As part of the experience, these trips include evening meals, stories, and tall tales, along with knowledge of the flora and fauna. It’s about as close to going back in time without a DeLorean.

For many kids (and adults too), a lifelong dream is just getting on a horse. From the scenery to the near perfect summer weather, Bishop is the perfect place to fulfill that dream. Certain pack outfits cater specifically to parent/kid outings such as Rock Creek Pack Station. Throughout June and July, they offer a three-day outing where you and your child can go riding, fishing, and camping. Or you can take it as short as a 15 minute “Walk n’ Lead” Trail ride with Rainbow Pack Outfitters that’s perfect for young cowpokes 6 years of age or under.
