Only One Tank Away… Or None At All

A Tesla electric vehicle is parked at a Tesla Supercharger station outside a building in Bishop, California. The charging stalls are under a clear sky and surrounded by trees. Other cars are also parked nearby, and there are signs indicating the charging spots. visit bishop

By this time of year, you just need a break. A diversion from the daily routine. A change of scenery. And there’s nowhere that fits the bill better than Bishop for a road trip from L.A. especially this time of year. All the major mountain passes from the west are closed for winter. We’re far enough away to keep the weekend crowds at bay but close enough that you can visit on one tank of gas, or if you own an electric vehicle, none at all! In addition to the classic reasons to visit Bishop, here’s a few ideas that fly under the radar (pun intended) and just as fun.

Gateway To Mystery

Maybe because it’s situated within a hundred miles of the highest AND lowest points in the contiguous points. Or that Bishop is in one of the least populated counties in the Golden State. For whatever reason, Bishop has one-of-a kind attractions that most zip by. Take a tour of the giant telescopes from the movie Arrival at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Learn about a chapter in the nation’s history unknown by many at the Manzanar National Historic Site. See the natural phenomena of the “sailing stones” in Death Valley that kept scientists baffled until 2014.

Play The Classics

Compared to summer where the heat dictates what part of Bishop’s big backyard you visit, winter is the opposite. Due to the snow up high and cooler temperatures in Owens Valley, you get to “Choose your own adventure”. You could go skiing on the legendary slopes of Mammoth Mountain. Or embrace the season to its maximum by enjoying the rare occasion for a winter bike ride to take in the rugged and raw landscape of Death Valley on two wheels. Pretty much ANY activity you can think of you can do this time of year.

Even with more than 330+ days of sunshine, it’s a good idea to check the road conditions ahead of your visit – Be An Informed Traveler – Get An Eye On The Weather, Road Conditions, & More. Last but not least for those of you that have made the leap to an electrical vehicle, there are several spots where you can charge your car including one right in the center of town: Tesla Supercharging station and Vons Supercharging Station.
