Keough’s Hot Springs Celebrates 100 Years!!
Locals and visitors have flocked to Keough’s Hot Springs for one hundred years to enjoy the relaxing, healing waters. In August 1919, Phillip Keough, an Eastern Sierra pioneer, leader in civic affairs, and owner of the City Market in Bishop, purchased the property and turned the natural hot springs into a first-class health resort.
Keough’s enjoyed a glamorous heyday in the 1920s and 30s when celebrities came to the bath house nestled at the foot of the rocky brown hills and towering Sierra peaks to soak, dine, dance, and even fish on the premises. Keough’s 100-foot-long pool is kept between 86 and 92 degrees (depending on time of year), while an adjacent smaller pool is held at a steamy 104 degrees year-round. Water blasts endlessly from elevated shower heads into the pool’s deep end as a cooling system for the spring water. It’s the perfect family activity and lap swimming during specific hours.
Sun bathe on the lounge chairs, grab a bit from the snack bar, or take a short walk up the nearby Rock Garden Trail to delve deeper into local geology. Along the path, various large rocks-including locally extracted lava and obsidian-are labeled with descriptions.
