Bishop’s Big Backyard isn’t just an adult’s playground. It’s a great one for kids too! A place where adventure begins for ALL ages. This is a perfect basecamp for families that want to enjoy sunny weather, an almost infinite number of outdoor activities, and a heaping spoonful of small-town culture. As we like to call it – the “Warm Winter Wonderland.”
‘Hop’ Into Some Hot Springs
Every kid enjoys splashing about in water. It engages their senses – touch, sound, and sight creating a gleeful experience. Just outside of Bishop you’ll find Keough Hot Springs. A perfect winter activity for families. The large Olympic size pool is kept at a cozy 90 – 92 degrees in the chill of winter, letting you soak away any stress AND have fun too.
Get Them ‘Hooked’ On Fishing
The area surrounding Bishop is renowned for its fishing. In fact, opening day for Trout season is called “Fishmas.” Although many of the alpine lakes have a defined season, there’s plenty of places to fish all year long within the Owens River Valley. Take a look at this previous blog on getting your kids ready for fishing.
Need Snow?
With 300+ days of sunshine and only 8 inches of snow per year in town, we’re a great haven for those that want to enjoy mountains but without the pain of snow. But, if you do want to experience a winter wonderland, you’re only a 45-minute drive from Mammoth Lakes. Get your tykes on a pair of skis at the world-renowned Mammoth Mountain. Too far? Just a mere 20 miles from town, you can snow play or go sledding in the beautiful Bishop Creek Canyon.
As Dr. Seuss once wrote, “You’ll never be bored when you try something new. There’s really no limit to what you can do.” For more family fun ideas in and around Bishop, be sure to visit our Kids’ Corner.
