Where to Start
Whether you’re heading out for fishing, bouldering, or another adventure, getting an early start is key. Stop by the Pupfish Café for a Mediterranean toast or grab a freshly roasted cup of coffee from Black Sheep. Not a coffee person? Looney Bean has a variety of juices, like the C.C.R.—a blend of cayenne, turmeric, ginger, lemon, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Here’s a quick guide to Bishop’s best coffee shops and bakeries, perfect for a pit stop to fuel up and get you on your way.
Taste History
While many people came to California during the Gold Rush in search of quick riches, the Basque immigrants arrived because of the high demand for sheep during the mining era and their expertise as shepherds. Those who settled in Owens Valley longed for the bread of their homeland. Schat’s Bakery, which has been making Sheepherder’s Bread since 1907, still bakes it from scratch to this day. How good is it? They produce over 25,000 loaves a day—more than six times the population of Bishop. That’s how good it is.
Tour the Globe
Beyond the classic Basque tradition, Bishop offers a wide range of global flavors to enjoy after your adventure. From hole-in-the-wall Mexican spots serving up al pastor to upscale dining with views of a pristine alpine lake, the food scene here has it all. And don’t forget to grab some of the best jerky for the trail from Mahogany Smoked Meats, a local favorite curing meat since 1922. To top it all off, Bishop’s perfect climate makes outdoor dining a must.
