Buttermilk Bouldering Season
There are places that have good rock climbing. Destinations with great bouldering opportunities. Bishop’s bouldering, on the other hand, isn’t just world-class. You could arguably say it’s in a league of its own. A true testing ground for climber’s mettle and skill. And this time of year, climbers from around the world converge here to do just that… because it’s Buttermilk Season.
Buttermilk Road Access
Please note, access to the Buttermilk boulders is difficult. Washboards and potholes abound as well as impressive new ditches and washouts from the winter storms. 4wd & high clearance highly recommended. Check out weekly climbing conditions posted by the Bishop Climbing Rangers here.
What Makes Bouldering In Bishop Special
It isn’t just that Bishop has a notoriously high concentration of “highballs.” A term used in bouldering meaning a taller than average boulder problem, especially one where the consequences of falling are not insignificant. Or that there is a vast array of test pieces. A climb that’s both iconic and a standard of difficulty for that grade. Then you have a variety of rock types and climbing styles needed, testing your crimp strength, how thick your skin is, AND your mental fortitude. It’s the combination of all of this along with gigantic peaks looming over you and sunsets that will make you pause. This is what make it a climber’s paradise.
When To Visit
Since Bishop and the Buttermilks are situated in a high desert, winter is typically the opportune time, by April temperatures can easily hit ninety degrees putting a toll on the friction. Both morning roosters and night owls will want to skip the noon spring sessions and either get up earlier or stay ’til sunset to climb.
Responsible Recreation
This is a popular destination for climbing and as such it takes all of us to be responsible visitors, so it stays accessible. That means PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS and AVOID AREAS marked off by the signs. We want you to be safe but do not place crash pads on any sort of vegetation as this will damage the plants. Use a wagbag #wecarewhereyoupoo.
