Join an Archeological Dig!  Under the supervision of NPS Archeologist Jeff Burton, you will help uncover and preserve features from the Children's Village, home to 101 children and the only orphanage in all of the 10 incarceration camps.  It is open to anyone age 15+ able to do moderately strenuous work such as digging with shovels, hauling rocks, operating wheelbarrows, screening sediments, taking notes and filling out forms/labels.  Previous experience helpful but not necessary.  All you need is an interest in history and willingness to ge dirty. Manzanar National Historic Site’s Public Archeology Program

Manzanar National Historic Site’s award-winning public archeology program is returning with three projects this year. On March 24-29, May 27-31, and September 2-6, volunteers will have the opportunity to assist the National Park Service in uncovering and preserving Manzanar’s Hospital area, the Children’s Village orphanage, and the Administration and Staff Housing area.  Work at the Hospital will include rebuilding a collapsed rock wall, removing brush and dead trees, clearing flood deposits, resetting building footers, and excavating landscaping features. Join this annual event virtually to commemorate the memory of Manzanar and its incarcerees. Lessons Learned, is the theme for the 53rd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, which will be held online on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 12:00 PM. The 2022 Manzanar At Dusk program will also be held online in the hours following the 53rd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage. Manzanar was the first of the American concentration camps in which more than 120,000 Japanese Americans and their immigrant parents were unjustly incarcerated during World War II.
