2024 Fishing Derbies In The Eastern Sierra

The art of fishing in Bishop’s Big Backyard transcends mere hobby status – it’s a true passion. Each year, the Eastern Sierra’s lakes, streams, and various bodies of water receive a generous stocking of 650,000 pounds of trout. All courtesy of Bishop, Inyo County, Mono County, Mammoth Lakes and the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. In fact, fishing is so intertwined with the community that opening day of fishing season is locally dubbed “Fishmas,” rivalling the anticipation of Christmas. Why not make this fishing season extend beyond those dates by entering a fishing derby in the High Sierra. Explore the roundup of events across the region and become part of the angling history in this picturesque locale.

This is the Big Kahuna of fishing derbies in the Eastern Sierra. Named in honor of the late Blake Jones, a pioneer in the angling world who revolutionized fishing with his invention of the modern cheese bait, such as PowerBait, in the late 1950s. Jones, with his charismatic persona, not only left a mark on the fishing industry but also served as a spokesperson for Bishop and the Eastern High Sierra. His efforts played a significant role in transforming Bishop into a sought-after year-round California fishing vacation destination.
