Happy and Sad Boulders

Bouldering in Bishop is world class! Just 10 minutes north of Bishop, at the southern edge of the 300-foot high volcanic tablelands are long, deep washes filled with perfect boulders. The Happy and Sad Boulders offer hundreds of boulder problems that will delight and challenge climbers of all levels.

The Happy Boulders present numerous problems from V0 to V8 with a few V10s for added challenge. The Happys are a great place to go out with a crew of varying abilities. This wash offers more warmth and protection on a chilly, windy day than the exposed boulders of the Buttermilks.

The Sad Boulders lie in a narrow, catacomb-like channel offering up some easy classics and a host challenging problems among the low, steep caves and deep overhangs. It’s cool on a hot day due to the catacomb-like caves and less direct sunlight on the rock.

Between them, these two washes have plenty of low traverses and link-ups, overhangs with friendly handholds, crimpy routes, cracks, and a tons of finger pockets. Physical climbing on positive holds makes the Tablelands the perfect transition from gym climbing to the outdoors.
