Take A Hike
If you’re looking for a hike close to town, the Poleta Area is a great choice. Especially if you want to take them off leash and let some energy loose. Only 5 miles from the center of Bishop, you’ll find an extensive network of 2,200 miles of OHV trails and roads leading though almost one million acres of the Inyo National Forest. There’s even a nearly forty mile route from Bishop to Big Pine. Or if the summer heat is a bit too much, head up high into the White Mountains and see the oldest living organisms on the planet. The Discovery Trail may only be one mile long, but it packs a big punch in views as far as the eye can see. And remember, these trees that have been alive since the Roman Coliseum was being built.
Leap Into A Cold Lake
For a dog’s idea of a heavenly outing, it must include a chance to leap into a cold refreshing lake. If that’s the case, think about hitting up the Sabrina Lake trailhead. From here, you gain access to a series of high alpine meadows and lakes in the Sabrina Basin surrounded by glacier carved peaks. The highlight for many is Blue Lake which is approximately a 7-mile round-trip 1,700-foot climb. Or instead of heading up to Sabrina, veer left at the fork in the road and take South Lake Road. Just before Willow Campground you’ll find the trailhead for Tyee Lakes trail which features another four alpine lakes and plenty of high-country scenery to take in.
Suds and Pups
Due to Bishop’s high desert climate, it’s possible and enjoyable to dine outdoors in any season. Enjoy the warm sun on a winter’s day or take in the shade on a summer evening while enjoying a refreshing frosty pint at Mountain Rambler Brewery on their outdoor patio.
