Manzanar National Historic Site’s Public Archeology Program

Bishop, CA

Manzanar National Historic Site’s award-winning public archeology program is returning with three projects this year. On March 24-29, May 27-31, and September 2-6, volunteers will have the opportunity to assist the National Park Service in uncovering and preserving Manzanar’s Hospital area, the Children’s Village orphanage, and the Administration and Staff Housing area.  Work at the Hospital will include rebuilding a collapsed rock wall, removing brush and dead trees, clearing flood deposits, resetting building footers, and excavating landscaping features. Owens Lake’s Returning Wildlife – Its Hemispheric Importance

The double-neck guitjo has 14 strings and Joe has developed his own style and technique, playing both necks simultaneously. Classically-trained cellist Hannah Alkire studied with G. Magyar of the Hungarian String Quartet and is recognized internationally for her stunning tone and emotional, impeccable playing and for taking the cello places it’s never been before.

Owens Lake Bird Festival

Since 2015, the Owens Lake Bird Festival has celebrated the migration of thousands of birds as they alight at Owens lake to replenish their strength before they continue their transcontinental journey.  They migrate along the Pacific Flyway, which extends from Alaska to Patagonia.  Festival outings include botany, photography, geology, local history and culture, and more. Lessons Learned, is the theme for the 53rd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, which will be held online on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 12:00 PM. The 2022 Manzanar At Dusk program will also be held online in the hours following the 53rd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage. Manzanar was the first of the American concentration camps in which more than 120,000 Japanese Americans and their immigrant parents were unjustly incarcerated during World War II.
